The company's controversial merger of 1928 with Studebaker, driven by Pierce-Arrow's acute need for cash to finance new-model development, provided the needed resources for a new and highly acclaimed eight-cylinder engine in 1929, finally breaking the marque's long-standing reliance on six-cylinder power. As the infamous 1929 stock market crash and subsequent Great Depression loomed, Pierce-Arrow was healthy and resolutely continued to focus on its luxury-car roots and its upscale, discerning clientele more than ever.Debuted for 1929, the new Pierce-Arrow "eight" was a true breakthrough. Weighing some 100 pounds less than the big T-head six that it replaced, the new engine delivered 25 percent more power from a 12 percent smaller displacement. This Le-Seyde is a Japanese-spec, right-hand-drive car that's titled in North Carolina. Said to be imported from Japan in September 2021, it's equipped with a metric instrument cluster, and the odometer shows 63,834 kilometers, which represents approximately 39,700 miles. Launched in 1979, Japanese manufacturer Mitsuoka has long been known for producing quirky vehicles. Moving the boiler out from under the seat to the front of the chassis allowed more space for passengers, as well as larger boilers. The boiler venturis, being at the extreme front, were force-fed by the forward movement of the car, resulting in better combustion. The forward-mounted boilers featured a curved-front hood, giving rise to the nickname coffin nose. From then until the adoption of condensers in 1915, all models used some variation on this theme.rnrnIn 1906, Stanley introduced its lightweight Model EX, which not only featured a sporting Runabout body constructed of wood, but also an innovative adjustable rear seat that could be moved rearward to provide additional room for passengers or slid forward to convert the rear area to storage. A twin-cylinder, 10-horsepower steam engine propelled the Model EX to speeds in excess of 55 mph-a feat which production combustion-powered automobiles would not reach with regularity until 1915. Nearly 20 Model EX specimens exist today, but just six are Cars of Record in The Stanley Register, with full history from their time of manufacture. rnrnMost current Model EXs, of which this is an excellent example, have been fashioned from parts of other cars and with bodies and chassis built anew in wood, as the cars were originally constructed. Although not as prestigious as Cars of Record, these newer examples are well respected in the Stanley community, especially for on-road touring. Stanley owners, above all, love to drive their cars, and frequently value utility above strict historic accuracy. Safety upgrades-hydraulic brakes for example-are readily accepted for cars used in touring.rnrnAccording to this Model EX's history file and The Stanley Register, it was discovered as a barn find in Massachusetts during the 1960s. It later passed to Jasper Glenn Wiglesworth of Kansas City, Missouri, and then circled its way back to Massachusetts where it remained within a private collection during the nineties.rnrnBy 2004, this extremely rare Stanley Model EX had entered the ownership of the noted Oldsmobile authority Gary Hoonsbeen, who immediately set about disassembling the car entirely and correcting its previous subpar restoration. The following six years saw Hoonsbeen deconstruct, restore, and rebuild the car entirely.rnrnIn 2020, the consignor purchased this Model EX from Hoonsbeen's estate and fitted a new boiler, steam siphon, and whistle, and upgraded the car with hydraulic disc brakes for much improved touring use. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Hershey event, 9 - 10 October 2024. rn$75,000 - $100,000 USD rnrnA genuine example with its original coachworkrnNever fully restored; excellent patina throughoutrnWell-known history, including single ownership for over 65 yearsrnCCCA Full Classicrn rnrnOne of just 14 surviving touring cars on the Model 38-C-4 chassis, this car amply reflects the prestige of Pierce-Arrow, with its potent six-cylinder engine and handsomely designed cast aluminum coachwork.rnrnAccording to former owner and noted Pierce-Arrow specialist Pat Craig, the car's earliest known owner was Frank B. Cox of California, a well-known collector of the time best remembered for winning Best of Show at the 1957 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with his Rolls-Royce Phantom III. Mr. Cox later sold the Pierce to Richard Squires of Hughson, who also treasured the car-so much so that, while once in financial straits, he sold it to Edmund Gibes of Wisconsin, only to buy it back as soon as his situation improved, after which he kept it for over 50 years. During that time it was shown in the Antique Automobile Club of America competition in 1964, winning its First Junior at Santa Clara, and remained in regular use in West Coast events for decades. In 1998 it received the R. Vale Faro Trophy as the most original car exhibited at the PAS National Meet in Washington State.rnrnAfter finally leaving Mr. Squires' hands, the car passed to Royalee Schertle, and in 2015 to Mr. Craig, from whom the consignor acquired it for his own impressive collection in 2015.rnrnThe Pierce has never been fully restored, only fixed-up as necessary over the years. It still retains much of its original factory finishes throughout, with much patina visible to the maroon and black paintwork, and the black leather interior protected by period canvas summer covers. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Monterey event, 15 - 18 August 2024. rnAsking | $700,000 USD rnrnStriking wedge design and Mercedes-Benz V-8 power rnBelieved to be one of 13 Series 2 Imperator 108i examplesrnShowing just 1,912 km (~1,189 miles) on the odometer at the time of cataloguingrnDelivered new to Japan rn rnrnIsdera was founded in 1982 by the automotive designer, Eberhard Schulz, whose career had begun at Porsche having initially impressed with his hand-built prototype, the Erator GTE. While working for Porsche, Schulz continued to develop his own second concept car in his spare time, envisaged to mimic the design of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. In the early 1970s, Schulz departed Porsche and joined forces with the tuner, Rainer Buchmann, to form B&B GmbH & Co Auto KG, where the pair pioneered development of the attractive CW311. To generate publicity, the legendary Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star was fitted to the grille of the car.rnrnIn 1982, Schulz parted ways with B&B to create Isdera, focusing on small-scale production vehicles, design and engineering services. Two years later the company introduced the Imperator 108i, based on the original CW311 project. Just 30 examples would be produced over the following nine years with various design changes and V-8 engines sourced from Mercedes-Benz.  All, however, utilized a tubular steel spaceframe with a bonded fiberglass body and iconic gullwing doors. rnrnThe car's suspension is composed of front double wishbones with upper and lower transverse links at the rear. Coil springs and disc brakes featured on all four corners. Altogether, Isdera claimed a top speed of 175 mph and a 5.1 second dash to 60 mph. rnrnThe example on offer is a later, Imperator 108i Series 2, which can be readily identified by the pop-up headlamps at the front. Keen observers will note the softer overall body lines, a larger front grille opening, the inclusion of vents above the front wheel arches, and an offset NACA duct on the hood. Lastly, the exhaust was re-routed from the rear to a twin exit just ahead of the right rear wheel. These revisions amount to a shape that bears an increased likeness to the CW311 prototype.rnrnOriginally delivered to a customer in Japan, the Isdera was surprisingly built with a left-hand-drive configuration. Traditional for a German sports car, the exterior is finished with an attractive shade of silver paint over a rich black leather interior. Under the rear hatch, a code M119 fuel injected, 32-valve V-8 engine is paired with a five-speed ZF manual transmission which sends roughly 300 horsepower to the rear wheels. rnrnIn 2016, the car was registered in the United Kingdom, but it would soon be sold to an entity in Germany. At this time, it received a partial restoration courtesy of MePoPres F. Ulbricht GmbH. In 2021, the Isdera entered the collection of the current owner. Work invoices dated to September of the same year indicate the car was inspected and the cooling system, climate control system, and brakes were serviced. rnrnShowing just 1,912 kilometers (~1,189 miles) on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, this Isdera Imperator 108i Series 2 is an exceptional example that will surely be the star of any car show. Firmly in the latter category was the berline body mounted by the renowned Parisian firm, Fernandez et Darrin, to chassis number 13041. Featuring exceptionally full-figured, deeply crowned fenders; a low and  shapely rounded roofline, moving in a continuous curve to the rear of the car; windows cut at the same flamboyant rake of the windscreen; no side-mounted spares; and a broad polished sweep delineating the beltline, it was and remains an exceptionally attractive design, bringing to mind the four-door coupe nomenclature more popular with later automakers.rnrnAccording to information in the file from historians Marc Rabineau and Herve Pannier, chassis number 13041 with engine number 321127 was originally delivered on 30 September 1936 to Marcel Bloch, of the aircraft firm Societe des Avions Marcel Bloch in Paris, for whom it was registered as 7056-RK5. A pioneer of aviation whose firm had built its first craft in 1930, Mr. Bloch would refuse to cooperate with the occupying German government during World War II. After surviving time in Buchenwald, he emerged and legally changed his name to Marcel Dassault, honoring the nom de guerre used by his brother as a member of the French Resistance, and, of course, became even more of a major figure in the French aeronautical industry, whose family firm would be built into today's Dassault.rnrnFollowing World War II, the car reappeared in 1945 in the ownership of a manufacturing firm in the city owned by Marcel Boussac, a French textile magnate whose other holdings included the renowned fashion house of Christian Dior as well as the St. Cloud race track. Mr. Boussac was something of a J12 connoisseur, having also owned an earlier example-which, ironically, would later spend many years in the same collection from which 13041 is currently offered. Chassis number 13041 was in Mr. Boussac's care registered to another of his firms as 9382-BW-75 in October 1945.rnrnIn January 1959, the car departed France when it was exported to the United States by Ed Wachs of Chicago, possibly in collaboration with the well-known sourcer of great European cars, Bert Loyens. Mr. Wachs undertook the car's original restoration, before selling it in the early 1960s to the prolific European automobile enthusiast Walter Weimer of Washington, Pennsylvania.rnrnDan Hamilton of Reno, Nevada, a longtime connoisseur of European and American Classics, purchased the Hispano-Suiza in 1997, and commissioned a ground-up restoration undertaken by some of the West Coast's finest specialists. The mechanical components were undertaken by Tom Batchelor and Phil Reilly, while the bodywork and paintwork were finished by Kevin Kay Restorations and the interior by Ken Nemanic of Vintage Auto Upholstery. At completion of the work the car was debuted at the 2002 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, winning First in Class. Acquired for the present collection in 2008, the J12 has remained well-preserved, with its restoration still in fine overall condition, and has undergone recent mechanical servicing in preparation for sale.rnrnThe finest model produced by one of France's greatest automobile manufacturers, the Hispano-Suiza J12 is unrivalled for its smoothness, outstanding power, and excellent road manners, as one of the most modern 12-cylinder automobiles produced prior to World War II. Very seldom do examples of this treasured model become available for sale. Usually utilizing a UK-exclusive Ford Pilot chassis fitted with an alloy body he designed himself, and typically powered by Ford, and later Cadillac or Chrysler V-8s (typically installed by the buyer after purchase), Allard found immediate success producing nearly ready-made racing sports cars. Track success also followed, including a 3rd overall placement at the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans in a car he helped pilot.rnrnWhile the Allard K-series of sport touring cars was more luxurious than its J-series sibling, it was equally hair-raising. Sharing a wheelbase with the J, the K2's aluminum body was redesigned for a smoother, more Streamline Moderne appearance. Three porthole vents for the engine compartment and a pentagonal grille, both to become synonymous with Allard design, made their debut on the K2.rnrnAs documented in Gavin Allard's pivotal book Allard: The Records and Beyond, Chassis 91K 1846 was ordered 13 November 1950 and arrived in the US aboard the SS American Clipper on 16 January 1951. Records show 1846 was finished in red with red leather upholstery and fitted with Cadillac Mods. A nameplate affixed to the car's firewall indicates that after arriving in New York, chassis 1846, like many new Allards, was sent to Perry B.
