Lane, Jr., and Lee and Floy BarthelrnAttractive older restoration of an extremely rare body stylernIdeal for ACD Club events and activitiesrn rnrnWhile the sleek boattail speedster models justifiably draw a great deal of attention, they are by far not the rarest of the eight-cylinder 1935 to '36 Auburn models. That illustrious honor goes to the two-passenger coupe. The coupe shared its bodywork with the open cabriolet model, but featured a full trunk rather than a rumble seat, and was mounted with a fixed roof-essentially a simple wooden framework bolted to the top of the body, fitted with rear quarter windows and covered in fabric. A package shelf behind the seat replaced the cabriolet's top well, and that was that. Alas, this interchangeability resulted in many of the coupes being decapitated and converted to cabriolets later in life, making intact survivors extraordinarily scarce. Today fewer than 10 eight-cylinder coupes exist in their original form.rnrnThe example offered here is one of those rareties. Its ownership history includes Mills B. Lane, Jr., an Atlanta banker and joyfully eccentric man-about-town, who in the 1950s built one of the United States' most impressive early collections, dubbed the Stable of Thoroughbreds. The Stable included outstanding examples of many of the great Classic marques, including Duesenberg, Lancia, Maybach, Packard, and of course Auburn. When Lane's plans for a public museum of his collection were spoiled in the early 1960s, he gradually sold off the fleet.rnrnThe Auburn was eventually restored in its present livery, a deep red with tan roof and matching interior, and in 1999 was purchased by Lee and Floy Barthel of Michigan, the well-known longtime Classic Car Club of America members and friends to many, who enjoyed it in CCCA events for 15 years. It was then acquired by Terence E. Adderley in the summer of 2014, and has remained part of his distinguished collection, alongside so many other great Auburns, for the last decade.rnrnWith the Dual Ratio rear axle, standard in Custom trim models, this car promises excellent, usable performance, making it ideal for driving in CCCA CARavans and on Auburn Cord Deusenberg Club tours. As a fellow 851 coupe owner once noted, its extremely large trunk provides ample space for luggage.or can accommodate up to 20 cases of beer, depending upon the owner's needs. Indiana's Auburn Automobile Company revealed its first version of this dashing body style, inspired by a Duesenberg show car, for the 1928 model year and would offer variations on the theme through to the end of production in 1936.rnrnThe 1*number in the description* speedsters were designed by the legendary Gordon Buehrig. Audacious by the standards of their time, they featured curvaceous bodywork with a straight hood line shooting back from the radiator to a sharply vee'd windshield, down between pontoon fenders, over gently sloping doors, and descending in a graceful taper to the rear bumper. It was this distinctive rear design, elegantly outlined by chrome and striping, which gave the speedster its everlasting nickname, the Boattail.rnrnUnderneath, the speedster shared the same exciting mechanicals as other supercharged Auburn models. The glistening chrome side exhaust heralded the presence of a Schwitzer-Cummins blower, which boosted the horsepower of the Auburn straight-eight to 150 from a normally aspirated reading of 115. The 150 horsepower was sent to a Columbia dual-ratio rear axle, standard equipment on the supercharged models, which provided two ratios for each gear, one low and one high. The ratios could be changed as often as desired while at very low speeds or at a stop by moving the switch in the center of the steering wheel. This provided the supercharged Auburn with much greater flexibility, making it a true driver's car, ideal for both purring through crowded cities and roaring down country lanes.rnrnEach speedster bore on its dashboard a plaque inscribed, This certifies that this AUBURN AUTOMOBILE has been driven 100.8 miles per hour before shipment. It was signed by David Ab Jenkins, the speed-record driver who achieved some of his greatest successes at Bonneville behind the wheel of a late Auburn speedster. Of course, the plaques were merely factory decoration installed on the production line. Then again, no one who has driven these cars since has ever complained about a lack of speed!rnrnSERIAL NUMBER *number in the description*6 ErnrnAccording to its Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Club Certification, the history of this exceptional 851 Supercharged Speedster is known back to 1945, when it was licensed to H.L. Klingensmith of Pennsylvania. It is next known to have been owned by Ellsworth W. Hap Huber, an early and very active ACD Club member on the East Coast, then passed to his contemporary William Shearman of New York State.rnrnIn 1966 the Auburn was purchased by well-known enthusiast and respected restorer, Walter Seeley, who continued gathering parts and knowledge for its restoration. Mr. Seeley retained the car for 24 years before selling it to Robert Howie of Illinois, who would keep it for another 22. It was then sold to William Bill Knight of Brodhead, Wisconsin. Mr. Knight's personal shop at long last completed the restoration to a meticulous and concours-quality standard, in the iconic Auburn color of Cigarette Cream with maroon leather interior-believed to have been this car's original livery.rnrnFollowing restoration the car was Certified Category 1 by the ACD Club, and soon after was purchased in 2015 for the owner's distinguished collection in the American West. In his ownership it has been an award-winner at the highest levels of competition. It was twice honored with the Roy Faulkner Trophy for Best Auburn at the ACD Club National Reunion, and was 2nd in Class at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, behind only the famous one-off Cadillac V-16 by Hartmann-both extremely impressive achievements.rnrnThe car remains in outstanding, show-ready condition throughout, and is a wonderfully authentic and correct original speedster, retaining its original chassis frame and engine. It was subsequently owned in the late 1980s and early 1990s by Jerry J. Moore of Houston, Texas, probably the most active American collector with one of the most vast and comprehensive stables, famously with a focus on Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg. Mr. Moore exchanged the car with the Blackhawk Collection in 1995 and it was sold by them to Tony Aragola of Port Washington, New York. In early 1999 it was acquired by longtime collector and enthusiast Chuck Spielman of California, then by 2003 had been purchased by Frank Giglioni of Alameda, California.rnrnAcquired by the present owner in 2021, in his ownership the car has been Certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club as a Category 1 original example, recording it with the present engine, a correct replacement unit from later in the production run. It presents in very nice condition throughout, with its restoration still very attractive in this classic combination of black with red interior-among the most fetching for any Auburn Speedster-accented by correct side curtains, wire wheels with chrome discs, and blackwall tires. Further, according to the consignor it has been extremely well-sorted-both cosmetically and mechanically, including resealing the engine-to use and enjoy.
