Such rarity and racing renown has resulted in the original 427 S/C (Semi-Competition) Cobras becoming far too valuable to race or enjoy. Fortunately, Carroll Shelby began in the late 1990s to offer a series of Continuation Cobras. These vehicles bear Shelby CSX serial numbers, are recognized by the Shelby American Automobile Club and tracked in the SAAC Registry and were offered with a Manufacturers Statement of Origin (MSO) from Shelby Automobiles signed by Carroll Shelby himself! The SAAC lists CSX4314 as having a fiberglass body, which is how it was invoiced by Shelby. The aluminum body supplied by famed metal fabricator Bruce Kimmons was installed on CSX4314s rolling chassis and completed by Nostalgia Motors. In late 2002, This Shelby Cobra was purchased through a Shelby dealer called Nostalgia Motorcars of Rock Hill, South Carolina and ordered as a fiberglass CSX4000 series automobile. The original owners intention was to complete the build using an aluminum alloy body by noted craftsman Bruce Kimmins, owner of Kimmins Custom Fabrication in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Nostalgia Motorcars completed the installation of the 427 Ford powertrain and uniquely installed the Bruce Kimmins alloy body. The result is a genuine Shelby Continuation Cobra S/C with a hand-formed aluminum body like the fabulous 427 Cobras of the 1960!  1st of 6 Total LeMans Production Spec Cars Built by Shelby American in Venice, CA  First Factory Constructed Racecar from Shelby Extensive Racing History  Ground Up Restoration done by Bill Murray Le Mans Modifications including a 37-Gallon Fuel Tank, Rack  Pinion Steering, FIA Hood Scoop, Short Trunk Lid, Side Cooling Vents, etc.  Finished First Overall and First in Class at the inaugural running of the ARRC National Championships in 1964 at Riverside  In 1963, AC Cars partnered with Carroll Shelby to race at Le Mans. They prepared two cars, adding magnesium wheels, larger fender flares, an FIA hood scoop, a 37-gallon fuel tank, and a "moderately tuned" 4.7-liter V8. The race was dominated that year by Ferrari, the first five places swept by the big red 250 and 330 V12s. While one of the AC/Shelby cars retired after 117 laps, the other went on to a credible seventh place finish overall, third in the GT class, and first in the 4â5-liter class.  With this success, Shelby was off to the races. Six more Cobras were built to LeMans Specification. CSX2136 was the first. Arriving in America in June of 1963, it came equipped with the 37-gallon Le Mans tank, rack-and-pinion steering, side vents of the style that would appear on later production cars, a short trunk lid (hinged at the bottom), and the FIA scoop.  To add to it, CSX2136 was the first Shelby American Factory Team Cobra to be built as a race car at the AC Cars Factory in England. All cars produced before this Cobra were built as streetcars, and eventually converted into racecars. This was the first factory-built racecar from Shelby  At Shelby, the car was modified to compete in domestic SCCA/USRRC road racing events. It was outfitted with a high-output 289 V8, four 48 IDM Weber carburetors, a "Nassau" exhaust system, electric fuel pump, oil and differential coolers, front and rear sway bars, Konis, kidney-bean Halibrands, Goodyear racing tires, additional instrumentation, and more.  Painted black, CSX2136 was completed in time to debut at a September 8 SCCA/USRRC event at Elkhart Lake. Piloted by team drivers Bob Bondurant and Dave MacDonald, it finished fourth overall and won the GT class. Interestingly, for this Road America 500, CSX2136 was co-entered by Steve McQueen/Shelby American. The car was then shipped back to Southern California and repainted Light Metallic Blue. Its next outings were also notable: a third with Lew Spencer at the wheel at the L.A. Times GT race at Riverside in October and, later that same month, a second overall at the Hawaiian GP with Dave MacDonald again in the driver's seat. CSX2136's last appearance as a team car was in December at the1963 Nassau Speed Week. Frank Gardner drove the roadster to a GT win in the Nassau Trophy Race, finishing seventh overall.  After Nassau, CSX2136 went back to Shelby American for refurbishing. It was sold in January of 1964 to Ed Leslie who repainted the car black, nicknamed it "Snake," and cleaned house on the SCCA circuit. During the 1964 season #2136 would still have Shelby Factory support with the goal of winning the ARRC Championship.  #2136 won its class in seven of the eleven races entered, including the major victory at the 1964 ARRC finale at Riverside. Leslie also drove the Cobra to overall and GT class wins at the May 8 USRRC event at Laguna Seca.  After winning the 1964 SCCA National Championship, Leslie sold the Cobra to Foster Alexander. Campaigned throughout the northwest, it continued its winning ways. Foster piloted CSX2136 into the 1965 ARRC National Championships in Daytona where it finished third both overall and in its class.  Eber later sold the car to Steve Baker, who turned it over to legendary racer, Cobra historian, and restoration specialist Bill Murray. Murray meticulously brought #2136 back full circle to its original 1963 configuration as a Shelby Team racer. Upon completion in 1992, the car won a first place in the AACA's Junior Competition Car division. The car has been carefully stored and maintained in collections ever since.  Cobra number CSX2136 is incredibly rare, one of only six of these competition Cobras ever built and the first of only three Factory Team LeMans Production Cobra's. It's record on the racetrack, both with Team Shelby and in the hands of individual enthusiasts, is absolutely stunning and was a major contributor to the early racing dominance of the Shelby Cobra in the US.  Upon arrival at Canepa, every collector car for sale is put through an extensive and diligent process called the "Canepa Difference." This includes a major and comprehensive mechanical inspection where all systems are checked, serviced, and restored as needed. They also receive award-winning concours-level detailing, including a thorough cleaning of each and every surface.

Remaining in the city, a new owner retained the car from 1969 through to the mid-1980s, at which point it found a custodian in Lyon. rnrnThe 2019 edition of the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) Registry notes that it surfaced in France in 2006 painted blue. By this point, the GT350 had only four French owners from new, and was then acquired by the Swiss Shelby specialist, Burgol Automobiles. It was subsequently returned to white with the addition of classic blue racing stripes. The black interior features a dash-mounted Shelby tachometer, steering wheel with Shelby centre cap, and bucket seats with Ray Brown lap belts. The car was acquired by The Curated Collection in Belgium in June 2014. rnrnThe confidential Ford serial number on the driver's side wing has been verified by SAAC registrar, Howard Pardee (document available to view on file). Please note that the Shelby plate on the driver's side wing is not original to the car. The SFM stamp typically found on the passenger side wing appears to have been etched and not stamped and is missing the SFM prefix. The brake master cylinder has been changed to a dual-bowl setup, the rear brake lines are not correct, and the rear axle has been replaced with a non-factory-specification item. This combination was incredibly capable in skilled hands, but it demanded respect-for just like its namesake, the Cobra could quickly turn and bite an unwary driver. This fortunate Cobra, chassis CSX 2134, survived one such harrowing ordeal and rose to live a second life as intriguing as its first.rnrnCSX 2134 began life as any Cobra, constructed by AC Cars in England and dispatched for New York on 27 June 1963 aboard the SS American Commander. Upon landing on American shores, it was transported to Shelby American where it received its engine and chassis upgrades. Originally finished in off-white over red trim, the Cobra was factory-prepared with the Class A accessory group including white sidewall tires and a luggage rack. On 24 August 1963, CSX 2134 was consigned along with four other Cobras to W.J. Janner of Ford Motor Company Car Sales Promotion in Dearborn, Michigan. CSX 2134 was shipped via Shelby American truck to the Ford District office in Kansas City, Missouri. rnrnInterestingly, the Shelby American Automobile Club Leaf Spring Cobra Registry reports that future Ford Racing Director Jacques Passino was invoiced for the car on 16 September 1963. This was possibly for accounting purposes, as the car continued its service as a demonstrator until mid-1964, when CSX 2134 was returned to Shelby American with just over 6,000 miles displayed on the odometer. Upon receipt, Shelby American added accessories such as new bumper guards, convertible top, side curtains, tonneau, and floor mats, while performing various minor repairs and a complete respray in Lucite before distributing it for sale via Carroll Shelby & Lew Spencer's Hi-Performance Motors of Los Angeles, California.rnrnWhile details of its first private owner are lost to history, the car's true story begins after an accident at the hands of its second owner, David R. Knisley of California. The Cobra was rendered inoperable and the original aluminum body was heavily damaged from the accident, so Knisley sold the impaired Cobra in 1972 to Charles R. Luscombe who soon admitted his intention of repairing the body had been overly optimistic. Luscombe removed what remained of the damaged body, disposed of it in a landfill, and placed the Cobra chassis into storage. rnrnIn April 1995, after more than two decades in repose, Luscombe sold CSX 2134 to noted Carson City, Nevada-based drag racer Chet Bunch, who immediately began a comprehensive restoration. He commissioned a new aluminum body from esteemed metalsmiths Bruce and Collin Kimmons of Lake Havasu, Arizona, who crafted the body with competition-inspired features such as flared fenders, riveted hood scoop, and provisions made for heavy-duty side exhaust, driver roll bar, front and rear quick jacks, and an FIA-style fuel filler before shipping to Bunch's own restoration shop for final assembly. A renowned restorer in his own right having previously worked on such iconic competition cars as the Flip-Top Cobra 427 prototype, Corvette SR-2, and Gulf One Z06 Corvette, Bunch envisioned this Cobra being his lifelong pride and joy. Determined to spare no effort or expense demonstrating the full extent of his mechanical expertise, Chet spent the next 20 years crafting CSX 2134 into the ultimate driving Cobra.rnrnWhile acknowledging the inherently sensitive nature of altering an original Shelby Cobra, Bunch believed the extensive modifications he deemed necessary might be more acceptable to purists if carried out in the same fashion as Shelby American in the 1960s. What followed was an intricate, costly, and labor-intensive series of enhancements to reinforce the chassis, mirroring the methods used on Shelby's legendary Daytona Coupes. This involved adding lengths of tubing to the frame in triangulated patterns to maximize rigidity and preserve weight distribution, all while ensuring the upgrades remained discreet.rnrnWith the chassis completed, Bunch fabricated a rocker-arm coilover suspension system in place of the original leaf springs, again taking great care in ensuring his modifications were easily removable should a future owner choose to return to factory specifications. For power, Bunch custom-built an engine to his exacting standards, starting with a Mexican 302-cubic-inch V-8 block, believed by many to be a stronger casting well-suited for additional power. The engine was stroked to 347 cubic inches and equipped with numerous performance upgrades backed by a four-speed manual transmission, yielding a reported 509 horsepower while still running on street gasoline. The interior appears stock with a wood-rimmed steering wheel, Smiths gauges that monitor performance, and bucket seats with lap belts. The exterior features Cobra-branded wind wings, a driver's side-view mirror, a side exit exhaust, and Halibrand knock-off wheels with BF Goodrich tires. rnrnNow offered for the first time in 30 years, the car's next steward faces the enviable choice of enjoying a remarkably drivable Cobra that far exceeds its factory capabilities-or, alternatively, returning the car to the way in which it left Shelby American to honor its early history as a FoMoCo demonstrator. rnTo view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM Sotheby's website.
