Aluminum engine,  550 HP  Powerful, lightweight, and an American icon, the Shelby 427 Cobra was the brainchild of sports car builder Carroll Shelby. While the original CSX3000 series of 427 Cobras ended production in 1967, the insatiable appetite for Cobras from the public around the world did not. During this time, many companies tried to make similar examples using Shelby's tried-and-true formula of lightweight cars with massively powerful engines but were never true Shelby Cobras. Then in 1996, almost three decades after the last original 427 Cobra rolled off the production line, the new CSX4000 series was born. Now offered by Shelby American, Inc., no Cobra kit manufacturer could offer what the American company now produced: True Shelby authenticity.  CSX4000 series cars were offered in both fiberglass and aluminum-bodied forms, with the aluminum examples being rare, almost doubling the purchase price of the car due to their labor-intensive hand-formed panels. These Shelby Cobras were delivered to authorized dealers as rolling chassis for the final fitment of the engine and transmission, allowing the new owner to choose a power plant and transmission of their choice.  Since 1962, when Carroll Shelby built the first Cobra, many companies have tried to make a copy of this iconic sports car. Most are offered in kit form, and the customer is left to assemble or build the car themselves. Beginning in the late 1990s, Carroll himself decided that he would produce a continuation Cobra, featuring a hand-crafted aluminum body, 4-inch round tube chassis, and many of the same mechanical components as the original 427 Cobras had. In 2002, Carroll Shelby authorized a run of 40 CSX 4000 Cobras to be produced with special features to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Cobra. This car is #18 of only 40 anniversary Cobras produced.  Exterior features include special "Anniversary Blue" paint, street bumpers with overrides sun visors, wind wings, chrome roll bar, ceramic coated side pipes, and a cooling splitter in the grille opening.  Interior features include leather seats and dash, 40th-anniversary commemorative gauges and floor mats, door pockets, glove box (signed by Carroll Shelby), heater/defroster, ashtray, lighter, and shoulder belts.  The drivetrain consists of an all-aluminum 427 big block engine mated to a big shaft Top Loader 4-speed transmission. The independent rear differential features an aluminum center section housing 3.54:1 gears.  Included with the car is the original M.S.O. signed by Carroll Shelby, build photos, and receipts.  The Shelby CSX cars are the only Cobras to be licensed by Shelby American and are documented and included in the Shelby American Automobile Club World Registry.  This 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 has been meticulously cared for and recently underwent significant maintenance and upgrades. In August 2022, the fuel system received a thorough overhaul, with the fuel cell inspected and fuel cell foam replaced by Fuel Safe, a carburetor rebuild, and the installation of a new fuel pressure gauge and filter.  Upon arriving at Canepa, the cobra was inspected from front to back and given a checklist of what items needed to be addressed. The car was given a full mechanical inspection and servicing as needed, then sent to our detailing department where it was given a full detailing. The blue paint finish was polished using only foam pads to bring a deep luster to the surface. The interior was thoroughly cleaned, leaving it spotless and in excellent condition. Knowing full well that modifications were needed to accomplish the latter, Iacocca turned to Carroll Shelby. Initially balking at the idea, Shelby eventually came around, with his team at Shelby American creating one of the most iconic American sports cars of the 1960s: The Shelby GT350.rnrnStarting with Ford's already exceptional K-code Mustang fastback, Carroll Shelby and his team at Shelby American loaded the GT350 with numerous suspension upgrades, also improving safety equipment and the engine-adding approximately 35 horsepower over the standard Hi-Po 289 V-8. The result was a production class-racing powerhouse that easily met the challenge from other cars of the day, including the Sunbeam Tiger and Jaguar E-Type, as well as Ford's archnemesis, the Chevrolet Corvette. For 1965, Shelby American produced a total of 562 GT350s.rnrnThis Shelby GT350, chassis number SFM 5S137, was completed on 27 April 1965. Two days following completion, the car was shipped to Turner Ford in Wichita, Kansas. Shelby American billed the dealership $3,929.60, which included $220 for Cragar wheels and $63.60 for freight. On 6 December 1966, the car was purchased by William Barker of Norman, Oklahoma. In 1967 the car was sold to Lee Jennings of Texas, who later traded it for a 1967 Shelby GT350. It was acquired in 1990 by Morris Kuehl of Waco, Texas, and later passed through an owner in Utah and one in Spokane, Washington, before being purchased by Mark Jacob of Calabasas, California, in January 2004. According to the SAAC Registry, Mr. Jacob had the car restored by Jim Cowles' Shelby Parts and Restoration in Wisconsin. In December 2011, it joined a Pacific Northwest private collection, from which it is now offered.rnrnToday, this Shelby GT350 offers a wonderful entry into the Shelby community. Finished in the traditional American racing colors of the day, SFM 5S137 dons the iconic Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue Le Mans stripes. It features a fiberglass hood, side-exit exhaust, and rides on Goodyear blue dot tires mounted on Cragar wheels. The interior is trimmed in black featuring bucket seats with Ray Brown lap belts and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. It retains early GT350 features including the Shelby gauge pod, which houses the tachometer and oil pressure gauges, a horn toggle switch just left of the radio-delete plate, a fiberglass package tray which houses the spare, a delete plate covering the rear seat latch, and a trunk-mounted battery. A sticker on the ashtray informs the driver of the car's NoSpin Differential. The rear axle features overriders and is equipped with the limiting cables found on early cars. Each window features the CarLite logo etched into the glass. A true racecar, this GT350 is a heater-delete example, with plates covering the firewall and the area where the control panel would have been located in the cabin. rnrnThe confidential Ford serial number on the driver-side fender has been verified by SAAC registrar Howard Pardee, with documentation on file. The engine block exhibits the car's confidential Ford serial number, and the cylinder heads feature castings 19 and 20. It is fueled by a Holley 715-cfm carburetor (List 3259). The engine is mated to an aluminum Borg Warner T-10 four-speed gearbox (casting code T10M-1). Impressed by the combined agility and power of borrowed Cad-Allards, he resolved to create the ultimate Anglo-American hybrid. AC Cars of Thames Ditton, England provided a nimble tubular frame and aluminum body in their Ace, highly reputed for its dexterity on the European circuit. Desirous of the visceral power of the Dearborn, Michigan-manufactured V-8, Shelby persuaded Ford to furnish their short-stroke 260-cubic-inch engine to complete the perfect union. The lightweight Ace frame had to be modified to accept the muscular V-8 engine, but such was Shelby's power of persuasion that both entities agreed to allow the new prototype to be named after the race driver. In 1962, a brilliant yellow Shelby Cobra was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.rnrnSporting a four-speed manual gearbox, the prototype, chassis CSX 2000, weighed in at just 2,100 pounds and was campaigned across the United States. Shelby American Inc. could barely meet demand for the brawny little racecar. By 1963 it upped the ante, switching to a rack-and-pinion steering system-but most notably, it adopted the 289-cubic-inch Ford motor with 271 horsepower and a top speed of 130 mph. The Shelby 289 Cobra could accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. The superb power-to-weight ratio enabled the newcomer to take 7th place in the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Dan Gurney went on to be the first US driver to win an FIA race in an American car at the Bridgehampton 500 KM in September of the same year. The following year at Le Mans, the Shelby Cobra won 4th place overall and 1st in the GT class.rnrnCROSS-COUNTRY IN CSX 2496rnrnThis Shelby 289 Cobra, CSX 2496, was billed to Shelby American on 3 July 1964. Seven days later it was shipped from London to Los Angeles aboard the SS Loch Avon, arriving on 7 August. The Cobra was completed at Shelby American, finished in white over a black interior. On 16 February 1965, CSX 2496 was invoiced to Norwood Auto Sales in Norwood, Ohio at a cost of $5,195. The car was specified with Group A accessories and further outfitted with an outside rearview mirror, radio, chrome luggage rack, WSW tires, and antifreeze, adding $333.75 to the dealer invoice. Surprisingly absent from the dealer invoice was the normal freight charge.rnrnJames A. Fraser had placed his Cobra order at Economy Ford, a customer of his father's company, in greater Cincinnati in December of 1964. Fraser, then just a sophomore in college at the University of Pennsylvania, had to have his father Fleming B. Fraser assist with the purchase of the car, even titling it in his father's name. rnrnFraser flew to Los Angeles to pick up the car at Shelby's LAX facility. On his drive back East, he stopped and visited friends in Chicago and Ohio before returning to Philadelphia. The only issue Fraser dealt with on the drive back was being woken up by a hotel desk clerk late at night; the Cobra's horn was blaring in a New Mexico hotel parking lot. In the pitch black of night, Fraser disconnected the horn and later got the short fixed. The Cobra would remain his daily driver until partway through 1968, when he received a company-provided car. Yet even through moves to Atlanta, Cincinnati, and South Florida, the Cobra remained under Fraser's ownership, with usage changing from daily driver to purely recreational from 1969 to 1973. rnrnThe car was repainted three times under Fraser's ownership, first to silver metalflake in 1966; he had not been happy with the original ordinary shade of white, which was the only color option he had when the car was ordered. In 1970 it was refinished to red with black around the nose, and finally a patriotic red, white, and blue with airbrushed stars in 1972. The South Florida heat left few opportunities to truly enjoy the car, even with an attempted air conditioning installation. In 1973, Fraser bought a Porsche 911 S Targa at DeMaria Porsche in Coral Gables, Florida, leaving the Cobra there on consignment.rnrnLater in 1973, Dr. Robert Bob Slayden of Atlanta, Georgia, purchased the Cobra after discovering it at the back of the dealership lot. Dr. Slayden would go on to have the car fully restored and refinished in red over black. In 1991, Dr. Slayden took CSX 2496 to a Carroll Shelby Foundation event and met the man himself, with Shelby signing the driver's side wind wing (photos on file). Despite toying with selling the car in the mid-1990s to acquire a Ferrari, Dr. Slayden would retain ownership, even commissioning an engine rebuild in 2009 prior to eventually selling the car in November 2010. Canepa Design in Scotts Valley, California, repainted the car black and sold the car to current ownership, a respected private family collection in the Pacific Northwest, in September of 2011.rnrnToday the car is offered in the desirable color combination of black over black, and it rides on painted wire wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle GT tires. The wind wings and sun visors are all Cobra-branded, and the car retains the Shelby-signed driver's side wind wing. The interior features Stewart Warner instrumentation, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a dash clock, and lap belts. The car is equipped with a black tonneau cover, as well as a black convertible top with top bows and side windows. The car's CSX number is stamped in the trunk latch and driver's side hood latch. The Cobra retains its matching-numbers engine, according to its chassis plate. The V-8 is fueled by a Holley carburetor (stamped S2MS-9510-A LIST 3259-1) and is equipped with cylinder heads displaying 19 and 21 castings. rnrnUnder current ownership, the car has covered just 192 miles. The Cobra is accompanied by a grease gun, Shelley jack, Thor knock-off hammer, and a modern tool roll. Since he had always wanted to use that moniker for one of his cars, his lawyer secured the rights the very next day, and Carroll Shelby christened the new Cobra Jet-powered Shelby the GT500 KR: The King of the Road. rnrnNineteen-sixty-eight marked the first year for a Shelby GT convertible, available on the GT350, GT500, as well as the top-of-the-line GT500 KR. The GT500 KR was powered by the legendary 428 Cobra Jet and featured an aggressive front-end design, including a hood with functional louvers and huge, twin air-scoops along the leading edge-creating a true ram-air intake system with under-hood plenum mounted directly to a steel air cleaner. Additionally, the cars featured 428 Cobra Jet fender badges and a Cobra Jet fuel filler cap. The new convertible design included a rubber-padded tubular steel rollbar that extended down to the floor. A unique cross-chest shoulder seatbelt debuted with the 1968 Shelby convertibles, housed in the interior trim panel, giving the fixed rollbar a sleeker look with no dangling belts like in the fastbacks. Two small eyelets on top of the rollbar were securing points for beachgoers with surfboards.or brave convertible travelers with skis. With the top down, the new Shelby convertibles had a sharp, targa-like appearance. rnrnThis 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible was built on 4 June 1968. It was finished in Acapulco Blue over a Saddle Vinyl Luxury interior and, of course, got the 428 Cobra Jet underhood. The engine was backed by a C-6 automatic transmission which sent power to a 3.00:1 conventional rear axle. It was further equipped with shoulder harnesses, a white convertible power top with glass backlight, GT equipment group, visibility group, power disc brakes, power steering, tilt-away steering wheel, SelectAire air conditioner, AM radio, interior decor group, tinted glass, as well as a tachometer and trip odometer. rnrnUpon completion, it was shipped to Smith Motor Imports in San Antonio, Texas. The car was purchased new by Elida G. Garcia of San Antonio, Texas, who would go on to own the car until 1977 when it was purchased by Fred Berry. In 1988 the car would change hands once again but remain in San Antonio under Thomas M. Murry's ownership. He would sell the car in 1990 to Steve Foster of Norman, Oklahoma. The Shelby was then featured in the June 1992 issue of Mustang Illustrated and the January 1995 issue of Mustang Monthly.
