Its ash-and-mahogany-framed body projected an image of affluence and leisure that increased traffic at Chrysler dealerships nationwide. The model became an immediate status symbol and a favorite of the Hollywood set; Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Cornel Wilde, and Barbara Stanwyck reportedly were owners, as was Max Factor of cosmetics fame and General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Town and Country was a dazzling expression of status when new and it remains so today.rnrnThe 1948 Chrysler New Yorker Town and Country had a base price of $3,220 before options-a 20 percent premium over the cost of a comparable New Yorker. Despite these obstacles, convertible production increased over the previous year by 173 units to 3,309. In late 1947, the interior mahogany veneer panels gave way to Di-Noc, an adhesive woodgrain material, though the ash framing remained. A considerable amount of hand-finishing went into each and every Town and Country, which not only accounted for its high price tag, but also its limited production numbers.rnrnThis wonderfully restored 1948 Town and Country Convertible is clad in striking Polo Green, which nicely complimented the bright, refurbished wood framing. The cabin and convertible top are both trimmed to match with a handsome blend of ivory vinyl and green cord. Amenities for this top-of-the-line offering include an automatic heater, push-button radio, clock, dual side mirrors, dual spotlights, clear fog lights, and a power convertible top trimmed in tan cloth. The car's chrome detailing coordinates with a tidy set of chrome factory hubs wrapped in period-style Firestone wide whitewall tires.rnrnWhile this Town and Country's earlier history is unknown, documentation on file shows that it resided with a collector in Alabama during the early 1990s, until passing to the consignor in October 2005. The 1949 model year also signaled Chrysler's final offering of its prestigious, limited-production, New Yorker-based, V-8 powered, wood-paneled Town and Country Convertible. rnrnThe Town and Country's white ash framing and genuine mahogany veneer panels were replaced in 1949 by ash pieces applied over an all-steel body with Di-Noc inserts or body-color painted panels. This was the first T&C that did not include the white ash framing as part of the structure of the car, and Chrysler claimed greater safety, durability, and ease of maintenance.rnrnBuilt in Detroit, the new-for-'49 Town and Country featured an independent front suspension with live rear axle and leaf springs and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Power derived from a 324-cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder Spitfire engine and Presto-matic fluid-drive three-speed manual transmission. Other standard features included a waterproof ignition system, cigar lighter, electric clock, and two-speed electric wipers. In total, only 993 examples of these steel-body convertibles would be produced, with relatively few having survived to the present.rnrnFinished in Sumac Red over an attractive cabin trimmed in Highlander tartan and red leather upholstery, this Town and Country Convertible also features a tan soft-top. A pair of optional auxiliary fog lamps are mounted to the front bumper, while dual side mirrors, a push-button radio, a heater, and a set of chrome hub covers round out the car's suite of desirable accoutrements. This 1949 Chrysler was purchased by the consignor in 2002 directly from a private California collection of mid-century American automobiles, at which time it was reported to show 18,269 actual miles. With the consignor, the car has traveled fewer than 325 miles.rnrnOne of fewer than 1,000 built, this Town and Country Convertible is a lovely example of one of the most evocative and elegant automobiles of its era. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Hershey event, 9 - 10 October 2024. rn$90,000 - $120,000 USD rnrnFormerly owned by noted Airflow figures Chuck Cochran, Joseph Klim, and Chris SackornNational award-winning restoration; documented by its build sheetrnA beautiful example of a landmark in automotive design and engineeringrn rnrnChrysler Corporation made automotive history when it premiered the Airflow at the New York Auto Show in January 1934; it was a radical departure from anything that preceded it. In addition to its streamlined Art Deco looks, the car was bursting with technical ingenuity: a novel beam and truss design combining light weight and superb strength, precursor to the unibody; an enormous interior with 50-inch-wide chair-height seats; for the first time in an automobile, a rear seat situated forward of the rear axle, offering unprecedented room; and an engine placed over the front axle 20 inches further forward than in other Chryslers, making for a very spacious front seat. Passengers sat within the wheelbase, resulting in a remarkably smooth ride.rnrnThe public never quite warmed to the styling and the Airflow disappeared after 1937 with only 55,000 produced for both Chrysler and DeSoto car lines over four years. Today, they are regarded as automotive icons due to the myriad technical and stylistic advancements the car offered, with over 50 engineering firsts and 72 national speed records.rnrnThe car offered here, one of just 110 Airflow coupes made in 1936, is accompanied by a copy of its build record, noting that it was originally shipped to Providence, Rhode Island finished in special-order paint and interior colors. Airflow historian and expert Chuck Cochran traced its ownership history back to 1958, when it was owned by Chic Kramer. Mr. Kramer sold the car in 1970 to Joseph Klim, who passed it in 1988 to Mr. Cochran, who retained it until 1996. It was then acquired by Columbus P. Chris Sacko, then passed from his estate in 2008 to Ronald Green and in 2016 to Mark Becker.rnrnIn Mr. Becker's hands, the car was an Antique Automobile Club of America Grand National First Prize and National President's Cup winner in 2018, and was shown at multiple events, including the Misselwood Concours d'Elegance in 2020, where it won the Misselwood Award in its class, and at the 2022 Chattanooga Motorcar Festival, where it won First in Class. It also won Best of Show at the Airflow Club of America National Meet in 2022. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' Monterey event, 15 - 18 August 2024. rnSold | $235,200 USD rnrnAn authentic, original, and well-known examplernOlder restoration by the highly regarded craftsman Bud HicksrnAttractively presented throughoutrnOne of the best-driving Full Classic models; an excellent summer tour automobilern rnrnChrysler historian Joe Morgan has traced and documented the known ownership histories of the surviving original 1931 CG Imperial Dual-Cowl Phaetons, examples of which are among the most desirable and best-engineered Full Classics. He notes that the car offered here, serial number *number in the description*, was acquired during the early 1950s by Joe Fisher of Media, Pennsylvania, an early enthusiast and connoisseur of Classic Era Imperials, who performed the original restoration.rnrnMr. Fisher retained the car until his death in 1982, at which point it was sold to the well-known Canadian collector, Terry Radey. In Mr. Radey's hands, a fresh restoration was undertaken by the late Bud Hicks of Marshall, Michigan. For decades Mr. Hicks was considered one of the Midwest's foremost professional restorers, winning numerous honors in both CCCA and national concours competition worldwide. In a 2017 telephone conversation with RM Sotheby's Research and Editorial team, Mr. Hicks recounted that the Chrysler as-received was a solid, complete older restoration, with good body wood and strong, largely rust-free original sheet metal, none of which had to be replaced in the course of the fresh body-off, ground-up restoration. The car was finished in Hicks Yellow, the unusual and attractive hue regularly used on the craftsman's personal cars, with an interior in rich Forest Green leather. At its completion the restoration was awarded a Classic Car Club of America National First Prize. Mr. Hicks considered the Chrysler one of the finest restorations that he completed in his long career.rnrnThat the car was so well-done is spoken for by the fact that its finishes remain largely well-preserved to this day, mellowed from occasional use but still highly attractive. Mr. Morgan thought well enough of it that he eventually purchased it for his own personal collection, and he enjoyed it enough that he would own it twice over the intervening years! After over a decade in another private collection, it joined the present owner's wonderful stable in the Pacific Northwest in the early 21st Century, and has enjoyed good care since.rnrnA beautiful example of what is arguably one of the most beautifully proportioned and sweet-running of all Full Classics, this Chrysler is due for a fresh round of show appearances or, given the model's famous drivability, enjoyment on CARavans and tours. Adderley CollectionrnAn original dual-cowl phaeton, one of the most beautiful Classic Imperials rnFormerly owned by John McMullen and the Andrews CollectionrnWell-maintained older concours award-winning restorationrnFeatured in Dennis Adler's Speed & Luxury: The Great Carsrn rnrnAmong the most desirable body styles on the beautifully engineered Chrysler CG Imperial chassis of 1931 is the dual-cowl phaeton, a design so striking that it, in part, served as inspiration for the Classic Car Club of America's logo. rnrnThe car offered here, an original example of this design, was discovered by the noted Imperial specialist and historian Joe Morgan in the early 1980s in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where it had been stored for many years. In 2015, Mr. Morgan noted that the car had been delivered in Pittsburgh on 13 January 1931, equipped with the very desirable 3.82:1 gears, and that it remained a very solid and complete example that was an ideal basis for restoration. Its new owner spent nearly four years on the car's restoration, including a very slightly lowered top to improve its lines, after which it proved quite successful in competition with both the Antique Automobile Club of America, winning its Senior First Prize and the 1993 James Melton Memorial Cup, and the CCCA, winning its Primary and Senior First Prizes with two perfect 100-point scores.rnrnIn 1994 Mr. Morgan sold the Imperial to the great enthusiast John McMullen of Lapeer, Michigan, who exhibited the Chrysler at that year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, winning First in Class-an honor that it soon repeated at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance and Willistead Classic Concours d'Elegance. In Mr. McMullen's ownership the car was also featured in Dennis Adler's well-known book, Speed & Luxury: The Great Cars, and in the August 1997 issue of Car Collector magazine.rnrnAfter spending over a decade as a centerpiece of the McMullen Collection, in 2007 the car was sold to another noted connoisseur of Full Classics, Paul Andrews Jr. of Texas, then from him to Donald Bernstein of Pennsylvania. In early 2015 it was added to the Adderley Collection and has since been proudly exhibited in its hallowed halls. The restoration exhibits some age to its finishes but overall is still very handsome, with an evident quality of workmanship and attention to detail visible throughout, reflective of Mr. Morgan's work.
