Continuing to benefit from a very nicely aging older restoration, it features a pleasing color scheme in Mint Green with Black fenders and moldings, a Black leather top with landau bars and button-tufted Tan cloth upholstery. This Pierce-Arrow is understood to have enjoyed touring use, regular maintenance and proper storage, commensurate with its attractive present condition. Desirable period details include wind wings, a golf-bag door on the passenger side, nickel-finished door handles and window crank, a sun visor and windshield wiper. Body-color wire wheels mounting black wall tires provide a period-appropriate accent. Rightly recognized as a CCCA Full Classicnbsp;automobile, this 1929 Pierce-Arrow Model 125 4-Passenger Coupe will provide a welcome entry into a veritable multitude of desirable events with abundant style.Buffalo, New York's Pierce-Arrow enjoyed a long and successful history prior to the difficult 1930s, having manufactured some of the greatest motor cars offered during the Brass and Classic Eras. The company's controversial merger of 1928 with Studebaker, driven by Pierce-Arrow's acute need for cash to finance new-model development, provided the needed resources for a new and highly acclaimed eight-cylinder engine in 1929, finally breaking the marque's long-standing reliance on six-cylinder power. As the infamous 1929 stock market crash and subsequent Great Depression loomed, Pierce-Arrow was healthy and resolutely continued to focus on its luxury-car roots and its upscale, discerning clientele more than ever.Debuted for 1929, the new Pierce-Arrow "eight" was a true breakthrough. Weighing some 100 pounds less than the big T-head six that it replaced, the new engine delivered 25 percent more power from a 12 percent smaller displacement. It was even less expensive, with prices beginning at 2,775, making renowned Pierce-Arrow quality available to a broader market in no fewer than 12 body styles. Offerings for 1929 included Model 125, named for its 125-horsepower output on the 133-inch wheelbase chassis and Model 126 with the same power rating but on the 143-inch wheelbase chassis. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Hershey event, 9 - 10 October 2024. rn$60,000 - $80,000 USD rnrnA fascinating, accurate reconstruction of the Model EX Runabout, of which Stanley only made 750 from 1906 through 1909rnCorrectly presented in Brewster Green with Cream Yellow chassis and highly polished brass details throughoutrnFitted with new boiler, steam siphon, and whistle; upgraded with hydraulic disc brakes for improved touring capabilityrnDocumented by The Stanley Registerrn rnrnDuring 1905, the Stanley Motor Carriage Company began introducing several new series of steam cars, ushering in a whole new era of manufacture. Moving the boiler out from under the seat to the front of the chassis allowed more space for passengers, as well as larger boilers. The boiler venturis, being at the extreme front, were force-fed by the forward movement of the car, resulting in better combustion. The forward-mounted boilers featured a curved-front hood, giving rise to the nickname coffin nose. From then until the adoption of condensers in 1915, all models used some variation on this theme.rnrnIn 1906, Stanley introduced its lightweight Model EX, which not only featured a sporting Runabout body constructed of wood, but also an innovative adjustable rear seat that could be moved rearward to provide additional room for passengers or slid forward to convert the rear area to storage. A twin-cylinder, 10-horsepower steam engine propelled the Model EX to speeds in excess of 55 mph-a feat which production combustion-powered automobiles would not reach with regularity until 1915. Nearly 20 Model EX specimens exist today, but just six are Cars of Record in The Stanley Register, with full history from their time of manufacture. rnrnMost current Model EXs, of which this is an excellent example, have been fashioned from parts of other cars and with bodies and chassis built anew in wood, as the cars were originally constructed. Although not as prestigious as Cars of Record, these newer examples are well respected in the Stanley community, especially for on-road touring. Stanley owners, above all, love to drive their cars, and frequently value utility above strict historic accuracy. Safety upgrades-hydraulic brakes for example-are readily accepted for cars used in touring.rnrnAccording to this Model EX's history file and The Stanley Register, it was discovered as a barn find in Massachusetts during the 1960s. It later passed to Jasper Glenn Wiglesworth of Kansas City, Missouri, and then circled its way back to Massachusetts where it remained within a private collection during the nineties.rnrnBy 2004, this extremely rare Stanley Model EX had entered the ownership of the noted Oldsmobile authority Gary Hoonsbeen, who immediately set about disassembling the car entirely and correcting its previous subpar restoration. The following six years saw Hoonsbeen deconstruct, restore, and rebuild the car entirely.rnrnIn 2020, the consignor purchased this Model EX from Hoonsbeen's estate and fitted a new boiler, steam siphon, and whistle, and upgraded the car with hydraulic disc brakes for much improved touring use. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Hershey event, 9 - 10 October 2024. rn$75,000 - $100,000 USD rnrnA genuine example with its original coachworkrnNever fully restored; excellent patina throughoutrnWell-known history, including single ownership for over 65 yearsrnCCCA Full Classicrn rnrnOne of just 14 surviving touring cars on the Model 38-C-4 chassis, this car amply reflects the prestige of Pierce-Arrow, with its potent six-cylinder engine and handsomely designed cast aluminum coachwork.rnrnAccording to former owner and noted Pierce-Arrow specialist Pat Craig, the car's earliest known owner was Frank B. Cox of California, a well-known collector of the time best remembered for winning Best of Show at the 1957 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with his Rolls-Royce Phantom III. Mr. Cox later sold the Pierce to Richard Squires of Hughson, who also treasured the car-so much so that, while once in financial straits, he sold it to Edmund Gibes of Wisconsin, only to buy it back as soon as his situation improved, after which he kept it for over 50 years. During that time it was shown in the Antique Automobile Club of America competition in 1964, winning its First Junior at Santa Clara, and remained in regular use in West Coast events for decades. In 1998 it received the R. Vale Faro Trophy as the most original car exhibited at the PAS National Meet in Washington State.rnrnAfter finally leaving Mr. Squires' hands, the car passed to Royalee Schertle, and in 2015 to Mr. Craig, from whom the consignor acquired it for his own impressive collection in 2015.rnrnThe Pierce has never been fully restored, only fixed-up as necessary over the years. It still retains much of its original factory finishes throughout, with much patina visible to the maroon and black paintwork, and the black leather interior protected by period canvas summer covers. Well-equipped as was the style at the time, it is outfitted with Westinghouse air shock absorbers and a Boyce Moto Meter, and includes a full set of side curtains.rnrnLong enjoyed in AACA events, this model is now also recognized as a Full Classic by the Classic Car Club of America, and thus a wide range of activities are open to the next proud owner of this regal Pierce, a handsome piece of quality engineering, well-kept and much-loved.rnTo view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM Sotheby's website.
