As an alternative to their flagship 911 series, the Boxster Spyder is a light and nimble convertible.

Handling is where the sports car sets itself apart from the competition. For optimal grip on the track, the engine is mounted just behind the cockpit instead of behind the rear wheels. Introduced in 1996, the first generation was internally known as Typ 986. A bold new Boxster was introduced in 2004. “Type 987” was the second generation of the Spyder. Power came from several flat six engines, with displacements ranging from 2.7 liters to 3.4 liters. A subtle refresh in 2008 included innovations ranging from direct fuel injection to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic. The Tiptronic single clutch automatic was discontinued. In an effort to reduce interior clutter, the Porsche Communication Management System was one of the first touch screens to incorporate suspension and infotainment systems.

The second generation ended in early 2012 to make way for a new model. The third generation is known internally as 981 and debuted with a 40% stronger chassis. Third time was indeed a charm, as the small car that was once derided by the press turned into a smashing success for the brand. Several special editions made use of high-performance engines for the ultimate in mid-engine motoring.

Announced in mid-2016, the 981 series was discontinued and the car was given a facelift. In the name of fuel economy, the flat six engines were also dropped in favor of turbocharged four-cylinder power. The new Porsche was christened the 718 and it arrived with 2.0 liter and 2.5 liter flat fours.

If you are looking for a used Boxster, a few considerations must be made. Because the engine is located under the rear package tray, you won’t be performing any maintenance from above. Service costs will be higher due to the exotic design, so make sure a complete history is included. The "S" will also retain a higher resale value in addition to being more fun to drive. All new for 2015 is the addition of the GTS to the lineup. Sitting at the top of the range, the GTS gained considerably more power and Porsche’s Active Suspension Management System for the new year. Rated at 330 horsepower, nearly 120 more than the base model, and 273 foot-pounds of torque, the Boxster GTS becomes the car that it always should have been. By no means is the base sports car a slouch in the corners, but you always got the sense that there was so much more potential to be had from a mid-engine sports car. The Boxster has been touted as one of this generation’s best driver’s cars; the GTS goes even further to highlight that accolade. If you prefer three pedals, the GTS offers a six-speed manual in addition to the PDK automatic.
