It's a small, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car, unveiled at the September 2004 Frankfurt Motor Show by the German carmaker. The base model of the first generation featured a 241 hp, 2.7-liter flat-six engine, while the S sported a 291 hp 3.4-liter power plant. With sheet metal and a structural rear end crafted from stainless steel, the sports car also shares many body panels and components with its convertible sibling. Lightweight and efficient, the car has drawn fans and enthusiasts and has continued to evolve from its 2005 introduction to the present. The S also benefitted from the improved option of a six-speed manual transmission rather than the base model’s five-speed.

A facelift of the first generation cars arrived in 2009 with increased engine size and performance upgrades. The base-level 2.7-liter engine was bored out to 2.9 liters, developing 265 hp, speeding from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, while the S model’s 3.4-liter engine received a power boost to 315 hp and a new 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds.

A completely new second generation arrived in 2014, available with the 2.7-liter and 3.4-liter engine options with either the six-speed manual or the new 7-speed PDK gearbox. Some of the exterior cues of the second generation were inspired by Porsche’s hypercar, such as the headlights and lower fascia. Lighter and more performance-focused versions are the GTS and GT4, both with high-performance suspension and increased horsepower.
