It is aimed at enthusiasts who value the potent brakes and suspension of the turbo but without the big engine and its hefty price.

For the first generation of the 991 series, the Carrera GTS used a 3.8 liter naturally aspirated engine that offered 420 horsepower. The only non-turbo car to beat it was the GT3 RS, but its wild aerodynamics and lack of interior comfort made it destined for the race track. It is also among the most powerful 911 examples in recent history to offer a manual transmission.

When the 991.2 appeared in 2015, Porsche shocked the world with a new base-model engine. A 3 Liter flat-six with twin turbos was now standard equipment on all Carrera variants. As such, the 2017 Carrera GTS is tuned to 450 horsepower to place it between the Turbo and base model cars while still offering a stick shift. The GTS package includes the coupe and convertible models, with rear wheel drive or AWD. The latter borrows the AWD system from the Turbo, and they are known as Carrera 4 GTS.

If you don’t want a coupe or convertible, another option it the Targa 4 GTS. As the flagship of the GTS series, it offers the best of both worlds. The 911 Carrera GTS price starts at $120,700 for the RWD Coupe, and the Targa 4 GTS can be had for $139,900.
